They've ben denying this for years. And it has been going on since the early ninties. We've even been sent mail here at the Alamanack when we previously posted about this claiming it was all lies.
The research funded by the National Institutes of Health spanned the country. It was most widespread in the 1990s as foster care agencies sought treatments for their HIV-infected children that weren't yet available in the marketplace.
A recap:
Poor children in seven states were used as human guinea pigs for AIDS drugs.
"Some foster children died during studies, but state or city agencies said they could find no records that any deaths were directly caused by experimental treatments."
The organizers promised that the kids would have advocates, to make sure that they were doing okay with drugs, etc.
But, most of the kids never had any sort of advocate, nor did they know what was being doen to them. ""Our position is that advocates weren't needed," said Marilyn Castaldi, spokeswoman for Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York."
